    Sweetwater Campground – 38

05.05.23-05.07.23 Lake Allatoona has many great campgrounds and over the past six years we’ve learned our favorites. For our family, Sweetwater Campground ranks number four on Lake Allatoona.  Sweetwater Campground is located in Canton, Georgia on the northeast banks of Lake Allatoona. We drove north up highway 575 to highway 20. The campground includes 149 sites and a large-group camping section with 9 sites and a pavilion. I made a color-coded map of RV sites vs. tent sites for the blog because Sweetwater has many more waterfront tent sites than most campgrounds we visit. If you’re a visual person like me, it may help you. When we drove around I…

    McKinney Campground – 114

03.31.23-04.05.23 Spring Break at our favorite local campground, McKinney COE on Lake Allatoona.  McKinney Campground is located in Acworth, Ga on Lake Allatoona. A Corps of Engineers park, it has 150 RV campsites, two beaches, one playground, and a boat ramp. We have camped at McKinney twelve times; it’s our go-to campground, nine miles from home. To help you choose your next reservation, details and photos from all of our previous visits can be found in the McKinney Campground category.  McKinney Campground is close to our home which makes it easy for Heather to commute to work. Fortunately she has flexibility with her start time, because McKinney’s gate is locked…

    Rocky Mountain Recreation

03.10.23-03.12.23 Looking for one of the best fishing campgrounds in the state? Or maybe just a campground that is off the beaten path? Rocky Mountain Recreation and Public Fishing Area is located in Rome, Georgia. It offers two large fishing lakes, a campground, beach, mountain biking trails, hiking trails, and an archery range. The biggest attraction at Rocky Mountain Campground seemed to be fishing. To fish at Rocky Mountain you are required to have a Georgia Fishing license, but not required to have a WMA (Wildlife Management Areas) license. In Antioch lake and Heath lake you will find large mouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish, redear sunfish, crappie, and walleye. All…

    General Coffee State Park

02.17.23-02.19-23 Checked off another state park on our way down to Florida. General Coffee State Park is located in Nichols, Georgia and while it seems to be the middle of nowhere, the park has a lot to offer. The main attraction is the farm where we saw donkeys, goats, sheep, pigs, chickens, ducks, and a horse. The park is about 1500 acres in total with a four-acre lake in the middle. Sleeping accommodations include four cottages, 50 campsites, four equestrian campsites, and ten dry camping sites. There are multiple playgrounds throughout the state park and about 13 miles of equestrian trails.   There are two campground loops; in our opinion…

Fort Mountain State Park – 15

10.14.22-10.16.22 Fort Mountain State Park is located in the Chattahoochee National Forest in North Georgia. The park’s main attraction is the epic overlooks with views of the North Georgia mountains. At the top of the mountain hikers will find a stone fire tower built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, open for tours on the weekends. The drive up the mountain has quite a few curves, but our truck did great.  The park includes a 17-acre lake with paddle boats to rent in the summer, a sand beach, and a putt-putt course. The State Park offers a fully stocked visitors center with plenty of ice and firewood. No cell service at this…
