McKinney Campground – 43
04.06.22-04.10.22 Changing your booking to what you would think is a better site in the campground doesn’t always work in your favor. We booked McKinney Campground in Acworth, GA on Lake Allatoona for Spring Break about four months ahead. The reservations for Corps of Engineer parks opens six months out and many of the sites were already booked. We have camped at McKinney Campground eight times, as it is our go-to campground, nine miles from home. To help you choose your next reservation, details and photos from all of our previous visits can be found in the McKinney Campground category. Originally we booked site 20, a back-in site that sits high…

McKinney Campground – 34
10.20.21-10.24.21 McKinney Campground COE is finally open, after two years of construction on their sewer system. Thank goodness, because this park is our go-to on Lake Allatoona. McKinney Campground is a Corps of Engineers park located on Lake Allatoona in Acworth, Georgia. It is in close proximity to highway 75 and a great option if you need to camp somewhat close to Atlanta. McKinney Campground is the only COE campground that is open year-round on Lake Allatoona. The campground has 150 campsites with electric and water hookups. There are not any sites with sewer hookups. McKinney has two beaches, one playground, and a boat ramp. This campground is so popular…

Old Highway 41 No. 3 Campground
09.03.21-09.06.21 We finally gave Old Highway 41 No. 3 campground in Cartersville, GA a chance and we are so glad we did! Old Highway 41 No. 3 Campground is a Corps of Engineers campground on Lake Allatoona. Unfortunately it is only open May 13 – September 5 (Labor Day). The campground has 50 sites, many of them waterfront. There is a playground, boat ramp (no dock), and dump station. The location of the campground is the big negative. The campground can be seen from interstate 75 and the traffic from the interstate can be heard through most of the campground. Fortunately, we were on the far side and did not…

Duckett Mill Campground – 3
06.08.21-06.11.21 Duckett Mill Campground is located in Gainesville, GA on Lake Lanier. It offers 97 sites with electric/water and 14 tent-only sites. The boat ramp is located just outside the campground gate. The campground does not have a playground; hopefully they will build one soon. The beach is located on the right when you drive into the campground. From our site we could hear people enjoying the beach—it seemed to have a lot more people than our previous visit. It’s difficult to book Duckett Mill Campground because the website doesn’t have site photos. I have been utilizing other peoples Facebook posts to keep track of sites that we would like.…

Old Federal Campground
06.18.21-.06.19-21 Shortest camping trip to date! Tropical storm Claudette was headed our way. We didn’t want to cancel in case the forecast was wrong. We continued to see heavy rain and high winds coming Saturday evening so we packed up before it started. Many other campers left on Saturday as well. This was our first trip to Old Federal Campground COE on Lake Lanier in Flowery Branch, GA. The campground is known for its epic water and sailboat views. The entire campground sits on a large peninsula and is constantly dealing with erosion problems. We have had multiple trips reserved to Old Federal and canceled because of storm damage. It…
