Fort Mountain State Park is located in the Chattahoochee National Forest in North Georgia. The park’s main attraction is the epic overlooks with views of the North Georgia mountains. At the top of the mountain hikers will find a stone fire tower built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, open for tours on the weekends. The park includes a 17-acre lake with paddle boats to rent in the summer, a sand beach, and a putt-putt course. The State Park offers a fully stocked visitors center with plenty of ice and firewood.     10.27.23-10.29.23 Halloween festivities and peak fall colors in the North Georgia mountains made for a perfect weekend! The volunteer organization, Friends of Fort Mountain State Park hosted Halloween festivities the weekend before Halloween. This was their second time hosting the event at the park and hopefully it will grow each year. The event was promoted through Facebook and the volunteers even reached out by phone to let campers with reservations know what was happening. We participated by decorating our campsite, taking our kids trick or treating, passing out candy at our site, and enjoying the hayride. The hayride was $20 per family or $5 per person.     10.13.23-10.15.23 After sixteen camping trips to McKinney Campground COE we finally spent a weekend in a campsite we would NOT want to book again. McKinney Campground is located in Acworth, Ga on Lake Allatoona. A Bartow County park, it has 150 RV campsites, two beaches, one playground, and a boat ramp. We have camped at McKinney fifteen times; it’s our go-to campground, nine miles from home.     07.13.23-07.16.23 Traveled south to check out another one of Georgia’s lakes – West Point. R Shaefer Heard Campground is a Corps of Engineers campground in Lagrange, Georgia on West Point Lake. The 25,900 acre lake runs along the Georgia – Alabama state line and extends 35 miles along the Chattahoochee River. It is a boater’s paradise with 34 public areas that have boat ramps. Catfish, bass, crappie, and bream can be found throughout the lake and creeks. R Shaefer Heard Campground has 117 campsites, a boat ramp, playground, and amphitheater. Campsites offer water and electricity for $34 a night. Weekends require a two night minimum, though holidays require three nights. The…
