    Sweetwater Campground

06.05.20-06.07.20 Corps of Engineers campgrounds on Lake Allatoona delayed opening 10 weeks due to Covid 19. June 1st they officially opened everything, but the playgrounds and beaches. Sweetwater Campground is located in Canton, Georgia on the northeast banks of Lake Allatoona. We came north up highway 575 to highway 20.The campground includes 149 sites and a large group camping section with 9 sites and a pavilion. I included a color coded map for RV sites vs. tent sites because this campground has many more waterfront tent sites than most campgrounds we visit. Also I’m a visual person and when we drove around I couldn’t keep up with the list at…

Fort Mountain State Park – 21

05.22.20-05.25.20 Memorial Day weekend at Fort Mountain State Park called for rain all weekend, but it was beautiful! This was our second trip to Fort Mountain State Park; we managed to pick up a cancellation for the holiday weekend 5 days beforehand. Check out my first post on the park for other details. We drove back roads to get to Chatsworth, Georgia from Acworth and it was only about twenty minutes longer than taking highway 75. Heather took off Friday and we left around noon. We timed it just right to arrive after a big storm. This time around we were able to pull off on the side of the…

    Duckett Mill Campground – 73

08.30.19-09.02.19 Duckett Mill Campground is located in Gainesville, GA on Lake Lanier. It offers 97 sites with electric/water and 14 tent-only sites. The boat ramp is located right outside the campground gate, which makes me wonder if it gets more traffic than just campers. The beach is located on the right when you drive into the campground. It never seemed to be crowded, probably because most sites are located right on the water. When researching Duckett Mill, I did not find facebook posts about people’s favorite sites or anything beyond a google search that pulled up a blog similar to this one. The Crafty Camping Mom posted about their…

    McKinney Campground – 55

08.16.19-08.18.19 We finally reserved the in-laws’ favorite site: number 55 at McKinney Campground. You know when someone has been camping for thirty years and they have a favorite site they ALWAYS book, it has to be good. The draw to site 55 is the fact that it is a pull-thru site with a large living space. It would be great for anyone with children or dogs. The site is mostly shaded, making for those hots summer days to not be so miserable. We aren’t usually a fan of the sites that have concrete picnic tables, however the one at this site was in a great spot. To the left of…

    McKinney Campground – 109

07.01.19-07.07.19 First time on the other side of the campground! McKinney has a total of 149 sites, but we have always stayed on the side with sites 50 and lower. Someone canceled site 109 about a week before the 1st and we were the lucky ones to scoop it up. Yes, it’s harder and harder to reserve the best sites–especially for the holiday weekends. Do not get discouraged! Site 109 is in a loop next to the boat ramp and marked with a grave site. I could find little information about the grave site or person buried there, but the marker says its the wife of G.B. McKinney born in…
